Title: Physics 11 (Physique 11e)
Institution: British Columbia Ministries, Distance Learning and Continuing Education Branch, Canada

Level:

Secondary.

Description:
This course has been designed so that students who do not have access to a laboratory can nevertheless complete the necessary experimental work. However, it is preferable to do the experiments in a regular laboratory. School students and others who have access to a physics laboratory are expected to do the experiments.

Block 1:
Paper 1: Measurement; graphing; the pinhole camera; direct and inverse relations
Paper 2: Laws of reflection; refraction; images in a plane mirror Paper 3: Images formed by lenses; ray diagrams; images formed by curved mirrors
Paper 4: Wave model of light; diffraction; interference
Paper 5: Interference of light passing through narrow slits; the electromagnetic spectrum; Doppler effect; polarization; review
Paper 6: Displacement; velocity; acceleration; graphing

Block 2:
Paper 7: General equations for motion
Paper 8: Forces
Paper 9: Newton's Laws of Motion; momentum; acceleration due to gravity
Paper 10: Theories of motion; relativity; work and energy

Paper 14: Electrical circuits; household wiring; parallel and series connection; electrical potential difference (voltage); electrical current (amperage)
Paper 15: Measuring electric currents and potential differences; electric power; electric resistance; Ohm's Law
Paper 16: Structure of the atom; isotopes; radioactivity;
transmutation of the elements
Paper 17: Nuclear energy; nuclear reactors; electric generators Paper 18: Review of the entire course.

Assessment may include: Tests.

Entry requirements:
Grade 10 standing, Maths 11 or should be taken prior to or concurrently with Physics 11.

Programmes in which this course may be included:
Grades 11-12.

Textbooks:

Fundamentals of Physics, Heath;
Physics 11 Laboratory Manual, Ministry of Education.

Languages:

English and French

Media and methods employed: Printed text, tutorial support, audio cassettes, video cassettes.
There is an optional video to accompany this course, which can be rented. It is not compulsory viewing but students will have a better understanding of the principles underlying the course if they view this video. It is expected that students will supply their own basic materials such as pens, pencils, lined paper, protractor, drawing compass, 30cm clear plastic ruler. A scientific calculator is recommended.

Administrative information:
Approximately one year of study is required for this course.

Certificates are issued upon the successful completion of a course.
